While waiting for our appetizers,
The boy: Who's that golden guy in the corner?
Me: Where?
The mister saw the golden guy on a shelf across the room first and answered, "Buddha!"
Then I turned around and saw this.
The boy: BUDDHA?! Has he always been overweight like that?
Me: Why?
The boy: Well, I thought he was not tambok (overweight). Is he always half naked and bald?
As far as I can remember, he's always like that. We had a huge one back in my parents home in the Philippines. No, we're not Buddhists. It was, I think, a payment for a debt.
The mister: Uhu!
The boy: But in our history book last year, he had hair, not half naked and not as heavy like that.
I really wanted to see that picture in their history book but we don't have a copy of that.
The boy: Is he always that happy?
The young lady: He's really happy. You can never see Jesus happy or smiling.
Sammy: Yeah. He's [Jesus] sad all the time.
I think the kids are right. I have never seen any illustrations of Jesus smiling. Not even a half smile.
The innocence is really cute. I'd try to search for a smiling Jesus too...:)

True. I just realized that. Why is Jesus not smiling?
ReplyDeleteThere are portraits of Jesus laughing :)
ReplyDeleteYes, but Jesus was a happy guy in his lifetime on earth. Can you imagine him not being happy after feeding 5000 people who were hungry? Or healing the sick and doing miracles? I believe he smiled a lot when he saw the joy of the people that he helped. In fact being in Jesus presence is joy in itself. Have seen a film of jesus where he smiled a lot. Jesus is the source of joy, peace and love. So with Jesus, we can be joyful in the midst of storm. And if he wants us to be joyful, it just mean that he is a happy man.
ReplyDeletenakakatuwa naman ang usapan... bida si buddha...
ReplyDeleteI think images of Jesus is like the portrait of Mona Lisa - it depends how you want to see the picture. If you think he's smiling, that's how you'll see it and then he looks sad when you imagine he does look sad. May sense ba? Haha :)
ReplyDeleteHi Lili! Amishu! :)
And when I think about it, the kids are right. Bakit nga ba? I guess because we have always been focused on how Jesus died in the cross for our sins. Yun kasi yun image na madalas naten makita sa churches. Though yes, I've also seen portraits of Him smiling before, I just can't remember where.
